Quiet and withdrawn child

If your toddler is quiet and shy, withdrawn and afraid, don't ignore it. Follow the advice of our psychologist to solve this problem.

under 8 years

To begin with, it is important to understand what signs can signal a child's isolation, which can subsequently adversely affect their social life and adaptation in society.

Symptoms by which you can determine the isolation of the baby look like this:

  • the child does not like to talk, may be completely silent or speaks most often in a whisper;
  • doesn’t want to play with other children;
  • has very few or no friends;
  • they’re afraid to start something new;
  • doesn’t express their opinion;
  • often hesitates to tell an adult what is happening, hides behind the phrase “I don’t know”;
  • does not take deep breaths, seems to breathe shallowly;
  • psychosomatic manifestations (contant made up pains/illnesses);
  • hides their hands, avoids eye contact etc.

There is nothing wrong with the fact that a child does this sometimes, however, they are often the result of parental behavior incomprehensible to the child, and the strengthening of such behaviors can significantly complicate school and adult life in the future.

Therefore, start with yourself, analyze how you behave with your child.

Ask yourself the following questions and analyze your answers to them:

  • Does your baby get enough of your attention?
  • Do you have enough time to play with them, listen?
  • When your toddler tries to show you their crafts and drawings, do you show interest? Do you praise them?
  • Do you often express dissatisfaction with their actions, do you compare them to other children?

If you notice that the reason for your child is isolating may lie in your family, then try to fix the situation.

In general, a tense situation in the family can also be the reason a baby isolates. A toddler's trust may have been undermined at some point by a meaningful adult (through conversation or action). If strict discipline, exaggerated demands, harsh punishments and violence reign in the family - in this case, the baby may harbor resentment and be afraid of being “disappointed” in a loved one again.

If nothing is done, then withdrawal can cause not only problems at school age, but also entail the inability of a person to make decisions in adulthood, the inability to make choices, take responsibility for their actions and build healthy interpersonal relationships.

The longer signs of withdrawn behavior persist, the more they become permanent.

To solve this problem, try to perceive the child as they are, get to know them, talk to them and give them more attention. Don't talk about their withdrawal as a problem and don't force them to make friends. Use game therapy, color therapy, or working with a psychologist to overcome your fears. Praise and support your baby in their decisions and do not talk bad about them. Also, do not let them scold and criticize yourself.

Be close to your child and help them feel stable and confident in this big world.
